This spectacular piece is one of the finest examples of hummingbird sculpture anywhere. A pair of Booted Racket-Tail Hummingbirds seemingly float in mid air while sipping nectar from purple orchids. The piece has won numerous best of show awards across the country.
Materials: Leaves, flowers, buds, & hummingbirds carved from wood (Tupelo). Stems made from brass & base is Maple Burl. Color is achieved with thin washes of acrylic paint.
~While the hummingbird carvings may seem incredibly fragile, one would be surprised how strong they are. Don recommends displaying them not in glass cases but in the open, just out of the reach of inquisitive hands.

"Taste of Colorado" is a woodcarving featuring a carved Male Broad-Tailed Hummingbird sipping nectar from blue columbines that are the state flower of Colorado. The columbine flowers and buds are carved from tupelo and the rest of the plant is made of copper and brass. The base is an incredible piece of maple burl.

"Another Cold Winter's Day" was the featured woodcarving for a how-to-do article that Don wrote for "Woodcarving Illustrated" Magazine. The carved Female American Goldfinch is perched on an amazingly life-like milkweed plant with the pods carved from wood and the rest of the plant made from copper and brass. The seeds are made from dental floss and wood. The entire piece is painted with acrylics. The base is a beautiful maple burl.
